One of the guests brought "Imperial Pumking": Ale Brewed With Pumpkins. From the Southern Tier Brewing company, Lakewood, NY. "Bewitched and Brewed with Pagan Spirit... Alcohol 9.0% by Volume, 19° plato, 8.8° L, 2-row pale malt, caramel malt, pureed pumpkin, kettle hops: magnum, aroma hops: sterling. Serve chilled in a goblet."
Pour: orange, light head. (I used one of my double-walled Pilsner glasses, not having any goblets handy.)
Smell: pumpkin pie.
Taste: "Hmm... tastes sort of like drinking pumpkin bread--- OH MY GOD WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MY MOUTH!? AAAARGH! MAKE IT STOP! Don't beat me, I'll be good!" Incredibly foul aftertaste. Like being slapped around with boozy mold. Scotch drinkers might like it.
Some beers require a second sip to get the correct feel. I screwed up my courage for another try but it was even worse. Same experience, good for a second followed by a load of misery.
I simply cannot believe this is the same beer that averages an A- on BeerAdvocate.
