Puzzled By Corporate Taxes

What makes

"Corporations don't really pay any taxes, they just pass the costs along to their customers and shareholders."

conventional wisdom, while the parallel formulation

"Individual wage-earners don't really pay any income taxes, they just pass the costs along to their employers in the form of higher salaries."

is obviously false?
