A Sign of Something

The Stanford CS Department newsletter tells me that the number of undergraduate computer science majors has grown 83 percent over the past two years. Currently about 9% of all Stanford undergraduates declare computer science as their major.

Is this more "I need a job when I graduate, therefore I'm going into CS" or "I want to get a CS degree, therefore I'm going to Stanford?" I guess I would need a broader sample to see whether this was a Stanford-specific or secular trend.
